Erica Barry Explores Content Creation, Viral Success, and Influencer Culture In Her New Book, Don’t Wait, Create


Erica Barry first became aware of the true power of digital media in high school when she began posting recipes, essays, and photos on an online food blog that she designed. 

From her laptop, she was able to build an audience online, get brand sponsorships, and draw hundreds of thousands of page views. Through the years, she’s witnessed the success stories of people who got their start on digital platforms like YouTube and TikTok and are now A-list celebrities. These experiences opened Barry’s eyes to the power of digital media, and she hopes to inspire readers to leverage its potential through her new book, Don’t Wait, Create: How to Be a Content Creator in the New Digital Revolution. 

In the book, set to be released at the end of this month, Barry provides a roadmap to digital content creation and finding one’s creative voice, while also highlighting the journeys of successful digital creators like Bo Burnham, Chloe Fineman, and Jimmy Tatro. All of those creators leveraged the digital revolution and launched their careers thanks to their ingenuity and drive.

“In the past, you had to fit into a narrow box defined by Hollywood to get your content seen,” she explains. “The content that we consumed, the celebrities that we admired, and mainstream pop culture as a whole, were all defined by Hollywood executives. However, the floodgates are now open for all types of content to enter the mainstream.”

For the first time in history, content creators have control, and there are many low-cost paths to reach a broad audience. Barry hopes to make things a bit easier to understand through Don’t Wait, Create so that anyone with a story to tell can work toward gaining the following and creative freedom of their dreams.

“Ten years ago, if you asked Hollywood studio executives what a “Vine Star,” “TikToker” or “YouTuber” was, they would have given you a blank stare,” Barry says. “However, those days are gone. We are currently living in the Golden Age of Content Creation because technology affords us unprecedented opportunities to share our stories with the world.”
