Dow’s earnings reporters provide a more than 120-point boost to the index’s price

The Dow Jones Industrial Average’s top-two gaining stocks Friday are those of the companies that reported third-quarter earnings, with the gains enough to keep the blue chip barometer positive despite weakness in the broader stock market. UnitedHealth Group Inc.’s stock ran up $15.31, or 3.0%, in morning trading and JPMorgan Chase & Co. shares jumped $3.31, or 3.0%, after both companies beat profit and revenue expectations. The combined price gains added about 123 points to the Dow’s price, while the Dow was up 43 points, or 0.1%, while the S&P 500 fell 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.9%.
